Program Breakdown

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA)

Made famous by international promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Strikeforce, Bellator, WEC, Dream and Rizin. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has become the fastest-growing sport in the world. MMA combines all aspects of combat sports and typically combines the martial arts of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Kickboxing.

At Mackay MMA, our programs are designed to cover all aspects of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). In a typical MMA session, we will work on our wrestling skills, takedowns and takedown defence, cage work, striking on the ground and all tactical aspects of MMA.

The Mackay MMA fight team is one of the largest in Queensland with very successful amateur and professional Australian Title Holders in the team.

Our MMA program draws from the experience of former UFC Light Heavy Weight veteran Anthony Perosh. In Anthony’s career, he won 5 Fights all by stoppage and won one performance of the night bonus. Anthony runs seminars at Mackay MMA.

ADULT BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (BJJ)

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground fighting system emphasising position, control, and submissions such as chokes, arm locks and leg locks. BJJ was made famous in UFC 1 where Royce Gracie from Brazil used BJJ techniques to conquer the tournament that put all forms of Martial Arts against each other. Mackay MMA’s BJJ program is under the guidance of Anthony Perosh, a 4th-degree Black Belt under Carlos Machado. Anthony visits Mackay MMA to host seminars and gradings. Whether you are a beginner, advanced or an experienced BJJ competitor you will find a BJJ class for your training level with Mackay MMA. Our classes include Beginner BJJ, Advanced BJJ, Women’s Only BJJ/Self-defence, BJJ seminars and BJJ gradings (starting from White Belt to Black Belt).

KIDS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (BJJ)

In our Kids Jiu Jitsu classes we emphasize taking an opponent to the ground and utilizing ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground. Kids BJJ at Mackay MMA is a lot more than just physical training. They will learn invaluable skills to help them reach their goals in daily life such as:

  • Self Defence

  • Confidence

  • Concentration

  • Co-ordination

  • Discipline

There are several experienced and accredited instructors with more than 25 years of experience in the art that teach Kid’s BJJ classes in a fun and safe environment. Mackay MMA has Kids BJJ, Kids BJJ competition classes, Kids BJJ seminars and quarterly Kids BJJ gradings (starting from White Belt to Green Belt). There are classes for 6-9-year-olds and 10-15 year-olds. They each train in separate classes twice per week. Ages 15 and up train in the adult’s class. There are regular gradings where your child has the opportunity to advance to the next level. The junior belt colours are White, Grey, Yellow, Orange and Green.

WOMEN’S BJJ / SELF DEFENCE

Women’s Self Defence / BJJ program is based on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) techniques. Unlike most self-defence systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, and coordination, the methods our program employs are leverage, technique, and timing, so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can make them work against larger opponents.

ADULT THAI KICKBOXING (MUAY THAI)

Muay Thai is referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs” or the “Science Of Eight Limbs” because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight “points of contact”, as opposed to “two points” (fists) in Western boxing and “four points” (hands and feet) used in sport-oriented martial arts.

Thai boxing has been around for over a thousand years. However, it can be traced back using records to 400 years ago in the former capital of Thailand known as Ayutthaya. In Thailand, Muay Thai evolved from Muay Boran (ancient boxing), an unarmed combat method that Siamese soldiers would have probably used after losing their weapons in battle. Some believe that the ancient Siamese military created Muay Boran from the weapon-based art of Krabi Krabong but others contend that the two were merely developed alongside each other. Krabi Krabong nevertheless was an important influence on Muay Boran and so Muay Thai as can be seen in several kicks, holds and movements in the Wai Khru which have their origins in armed combat.

We aim to bridge the gap between striking styles and make modifications to suit the desired style, so weather you are a beginner or a advanced fighter, you will find a Muay Thai Kickboxing class at Mackay MMA to suit your level and training needs.

KIDS THAI KICKBOXING

Like our Kids BJJ classes, our Kids Muay Thai Kickboxing focuses on more than just physical training. We hope to foster confidence and strong foundational self-defence skills that will help them in all aspects of life. Some of the things we try and promote in our kids are:

  • Self Defence

  • Confidence

  • Concentration

  • Coordination

  • Discipline
